Psychiatric Evaluations
When you or someone you love is struggling emotionally or behaviorally, getting a clear picture of what is happening is the first step toward getting the right help. A psychiatric evaluation is that starting point. At NIE Behavioral Health, our licensed psychiatric providers conduct thorough, individualized evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults across Massachusetts.
Evaluations are available in person at our Beverly and Worcester locations and via telehealth statewide.

What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a thorough, one-on-one appointment with a licensed psychiatric provider. It is not a quick check-in. It is a chance to slow down, take a real look at what has been going on, and start to understand why.
Your provider will want to hear about your current symptoms, your history, and anything else that feels relevant. From there, they can offer a clearer picture of what may be happening and what kind of support makes the most sense for you, whether that is therapy, medication management, other services we offer, or some combination.
What to Expect During a Psychiatric Evaluation
Every evaluation at NIE Behavioral Health is conducted with care and respect for the individual's full story. A typical evaluation may include:
- A review of current symptoms, how long they have been present, and how they are affecting daily life
- Psychosocial history, including family background, relationships, and significant life experiences
- Medical history and any relevant physical health considerations
- Review of past mental health treatment, including therapy or medications
- For children and adolescents, input from parents or caregivers and, when relevant, information from school or other care providers
- Diagnostic clarification based on the full clinical picture
After the evaluation, your provider will discuss their findings with you and outline recommended next steps. You will not leave without a clear understanding of what was found and what comes next.
Who Should Consider a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation may be the right next step if you or your child:
- Are experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, mood changes, or emotional difficulties that are affecting daily functioning
- Have noticed significant shifts in behavior, sleep, concentration, or relationships
- Are struggling with symptoms that have not improved with therapy alone
- Have received a diagnosis in the past but want a fresh, thorough reassessment
- Are unsure what is wrong but know that something is not right
- Need a formal diagnostic evaluation for school, work, or other support services
- Are a parent concerned about your child's emotional, behavioral, or developmental needs
You do not need a referral or an existing diagnosis to request a psychiatric evaluation. If you are unsure whether an evaluation is the right fit, our team can help you figure that out.
Evaluations for Children and Adolescents
Children and teens often cannot articulate what they are experiencing, and even when they can, it is not always clear to parents or schools what is driving the behavior. A child and adolescent psychiatric evaluation takes a developmental lens to understand what is happening at this stage of a young person's life.
NIE Behavioral Health's providers are experienced in evaluating children and adolescents for conditions including ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, trauma-related concerns, and behavioral difficulties. Parents and caregivers play an important role in this process and will be involved throughout.
What Happens After the Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation does not end with a label. It ends with a direction. Based on what your provider finds, they may recommend individual therapy, medication management, other specialized services at NIE, or working alongside outside providers. Often it is more than one thing.
Because NIE offers a full range of services in one practice, your care can pick up right where the evaluation leaves off. No starting over, no searching for the next provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
Psychiatric evaluations are typically longer than a standard follow-up appointment. The length can vary depending on the individual's needs, age, and complexity of concerns. Your provider will let you know what to expect when you schedule.
Will I receive a diagnosis after the evaluation?
In many cases, yes. However, some presentations require more information or time before a formal diagnosis can be confirmed. Your provider will be transparent about what they found and what additional steps, if any, are needed.
Do I need a referral to schedule a psychiatric evaluation?
No. You can contact NIE Behavioral Health directly to schedule an evaluation. A referral from a primary care provider is not required, though some insurance plans may have their own requirements.
Can a psychiatric evaluation be done via telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth evaluations are available for patients across Massachusetts. In-person evaluations are also available at our Beverly and Worcester locations.
